What is Chronic Myeloid Leukemia?

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a type of blood cancer that develops in the bone marrow and primarily affects the myeloid cells responsible for producing blood cells. It is characterized by the abnormal growth of white blood cells and is most commonly associated with a genetic change known as the Philadelphia chromosome, which results from the fusion of the BCR and ABL1 genes. This fusion produces the BCR-ABL1 protein, an abnormal tyrosine kinase that promotes uncontrolled cell growth. CML typically progresses through three phases, chronic, accelerated, and blast phase, with most patients diagnosed during the chronic phase. The introduction of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), such as imatinib, dasatinib, nilotinib, bosutinib, and ponatinib, has significantly improved treatment outcomes and transformed CML into a largely manageable chronic condition for many patients.

As Stuti Mahajan, consulting manager at DelveInsight, chronic myeloid leukemia is driven by the BCR::ABL1 fusion, with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) transforming it into a largely manageable long-term disease. The market is evolving from established TKI therapies toward newer, more selective agents and treatment strategies aimed at addressing resistance, intolerance, deeper molecular responses, and treatment-free remission, supporting continued innovation despite a mature treatment landscape.

Recent Developments in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Treatment Space

  • In June 2026, Enliven Therapeutics, Inc. presented updated positive data from the Phase I ENABLE clinical trial evaluating ELVN-001 in patients with previously treated chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).
  • In July 2026, Mendus AB announced successful recruitment of the first stage of the VITAL-CML trial, comprising the first 8 patients. This marks an important milestone in the development of the company’s lead product vididencel in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).
  • In May 2026, Merck announced the successful completion of the acquisition of Terns Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The addition of TERN-701, a novel investigational oral allosteric BCR::ABL1 tyrosine kinase inhibitor, further diversifies Merck’s oncology pipeline.
  • In April 2026, Terns Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation to TERN-701, a novel, oral allosteric BCR::ABL1 inhibitor, for the treatment of adult patients with Ph+ CML in the chronic phase without the T315I mutation previously treated with two or more TKIs.
  • In April 2026, Mendus AB announced that the first patient has been enrolled in the VITAL-CML trial, which evaluates Mendus’ lead product vididencel in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).
  • In January 2025, ImmunoForge announced that it has received approval for the Phase I clinical trial IND for KF1601, a treatment for Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML), from the Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
